A dietician will help prepare and educate you on the exchange<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">diet, the food groups, and what substitutions you can make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On the exchange diet all foods are divided into six food groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Bread and other Starches<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Fruit<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Vegetables<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Dairy Foods<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Meat and Meat Substitutes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">* Fats<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your dietician will provide you with the number of servings you should have from each<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">group daily and at individual meal or snack times. Within each of the categories, there are<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">many food options. Each food has a specific serving size that equals one serving, in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">cases such as fruits and vegetables you probably will not have to measure your foods but<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">for meats and other groups a food scale and measuring cup are recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The exchange part of the diet refers to being able to swap food in one food group for<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">another in the same group as long as you adhere to the serving suggestion. For instance,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">a cup of cooked pasta can be exchanged for 2 rice cakes in one meal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The list your <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">dietician gives you will be pretty complete but there are bound to be items not listed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">that case, you can call your dietician for advice or keep a list of items that you need to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">know of their proper serving size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the beginning, the exchange diet may seem like a lot of work, but as time goes on and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">you become accustomed to the serving sizes of your favorite foods it will become less so.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Proper eating habits are crucial to managing diabetes and the exchange diet is a way to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">eat a healthy balanced diet full of variety.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The exchange diet is a method of eating that provides diabetics with a set of guidelines necessary to eat healthily.
