When the child has diabetes, the challenge is multiplied. But it can be overcome, with knowledge &#8212; and lots of love.<\/p>\n<p>Children with diabetes are suffering from Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or diabetes juvenile. The number of children under the age of five being diagnosed with diabetes juvenile has almost doubled over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Caring for children is a challenge under the best of circumstances, and children with diabetes need even more special care and attention.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ask your doctor if there is any doubt in your mind.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms Of Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p>First, if you are wondering whether your child has diabetes in the first place, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">here are some signs to look for:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Often complains of feeling thirsty<\/li>\n<li>Hungry more often<\/li>\n<li>Suddenly loses weight<\/li>\n<li>Urinates more than usual,<\/li>\n<li>Diapers more wet than usual<\/li>\n<li>Occasional fruity smelling breath<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, discuss with your doctor, the possibility you have a child with diabetes.<\/p>\n<h2>Special challenges<\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-327 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Profession-12.jpg?resize=200%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Profession-12.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Profession-12.jpg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Profession-12.jpg?resize=682%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 682w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Profession-12.jpg?w=2400&amp;ssl=1 2400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>You or your caregiver will have to closely monitor your child&#8217;s blood sugar throughout the day to be sure it stays within a safe range.<\/p>\n<p>Ask your doctor if there is any doubt in your mind.<\/p>\n<p>Children with diabetes also require daily insulin shots, which can be traumatic for you as well as your child!<\/p>\n<p>When administering, both finger pricks for the blood sugar tests and the insulin shots, you should be as quick and calm as possible about the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>If your child is playing, go where he or she is rather than having them come to you. That helps establish the procedure as just a normal part of their day.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, your child will resist these procedures, and it can be hard for parents and caregivers to remember they are doing this for the child&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n<p>It must be done, however, and you may have to learn to restrain the child gently.<\/p>\n<p>It also helps to give them a big hug and a kiss after it&#8217;s finished to make sure they understand you still love them even though this hurt a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that children with diabetes can&#8217;t tell you when they are feeling the effects of low blood sugar, which is another reason for careful monitoring.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Children, in general, can be picky eaters, and children with diabetes are no different.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5a5d0754d04f54d0b28b964d_1920.jpg?resize=300%2C238&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5a5d0754d04f54d0b28b964d_1920.jpg?resize=300%2C238&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5a5d0754d04f54d0b28b964d_1920.jpg?resize=768%2C610&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5a5d0754d04f54d0b28b964d_1920.jpg?resize=1024%2C813&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marieparkeronline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5a5d0754d04f54d0b28b964d_1920.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The challenge here is in making sure that all your alternatives fit within a healthy and appropriate diabetic diet.<\/p>\n<p>Have as wide a selection of those foods available as possible so that when they do refuse certain foods, you can tempt them with an appropriate alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Children with diabetes should otherwise develop the same way, and at the same rate, like other children of their age.<\/p>\n<p>As long as you take the necessary precautions to treat diabetes, and your child seems normal in all other ways, there&#8217;s no reason why he or she shouldn&#8217;t be a perfectly healthy and happy child.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caring for the Littlest Patient Caring for a child is a challenge at the best of times.
